The Champlain Valley Trail
The Champlain Valley Trail continues north from Albany and runs 187 miles along the edge of the Adirondack Park. The route skates along the edge of Lake Champlain and its canalways before ending at the New York border with Canada. The trail is primarily on-road, with winding highways and vehicle traffic, and has been described by experienced bikers as a work in progress, or one they would re-visit if more infrastructure for bikers was provided.
Difficulty Level
The Champlain Valley Trail is almost entirely on-road, often next to high-speed vehicle traffic on highways with semi-trucks. Extreme discretion is advised.
Even experienced bikers have avoided portions or all of this trail until highways are extended or more off-road sections are added.
Our Top Spots Along the Trail
While the trail itself is extremely dangerous, the Champlain Valley is nested between the Adirondacks and the Champlain Canalway, and is in the heart of Upstate New York’s wine country. It’s worth exploring this area to hike or take a day trip in these spots.
